Alum is a chemical compound made by combining elements like ammonium or potassium with metals like aluminum and chromium. Potassium alum, scientifically known as aluminum sulfate, is the most common form of alum available in the market.

  1. Treats Canker Sores:

Alum powder is an excellent ingredient for treating canker sores or mouth ulcers. You can apply alum block directly on the canker sores or mix ½ teaspoon of alum powder with a few drops of water and apply on the affected area. Leave it for 10 minutes and then wash it off. Initially, it will burn a lot, but once you can tolerate it, it will show positive results within four days. Just ensure that you follow this method thrice daily. Alternatively, you can create an oral rinse by boiling two spoons of alum powder in 1 glass water. Leave it aside for the mixture to cool. Use the mixture as a mouth rinse. Repeat the method thrice daily until you see results.

  1. Tightens Vagina:

Vagina tightening is the most efficient use of alum powder, even though the effect is temporary. Mix two spoons of power of alum with water, strain and apply on the inner walls of the vagina. Let it sit for ten minutes and then rinse it off. It will tighten the vagina naturally.

Note: Do not use alum powder directly on the vagina as it can lead to disastrous effects.

This may come as a surprise to most of you, but alum is also an excellent natural deodorant. Simply wet your underarms and rub alum blocks all over it for a few minutes. Wait for 10 minutes and then wash it off. Or, make a paste using alum powder and rose water and apply it to the underarms. Wait for 15 minutes and then wash it off. It will kill the bacteria that cause odor.

The antibacterial properties of alum powder can help relieve a sore throat caused due to tonsillitis. Roast ½ teaspoon of alum powder on a low flame, mix it with a glass of lukewarm water and gulp it down. Drink this concoction once daily to see results.

Alum powder is used widely for purifying water. You just need to a gram or a pinch of alum powder to one liter of dirty water. This is the standard ratio. For five liters of water, you need to add 5 grams of alum powder. Let it sit for 15 minutes. You’ll notice mud settling down at the bottom and clean water on top of the vessel.

Note: Do not overdo this method as it can lead to side effects like abdominal pain, cramps, and vomiting.

The antibacterial properties of alum powder can help treat athlete’s foot. Just mix two spoons of alum powder with four teaspoons of rose water to form a smooth paste and apply it to clean feet. Leave it for ten minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Alternatively, you can just rub alum block on the affected region.

You must have seen local barbers using alum blocks for treating cuts caused due to shaving. But the usage of alum for treating cuts date back to thousands of years. Alum is a natural astringent and antihemorrhagic agent, which helps to seal or constrict the blood vessels of the skin, controlling the blood flow. This speaks for its inclusion in several after shave treatments as well. Alum is very easy to use as well. Just wash your face and rub the wound or cut with alum block for 5 minutes. Leave it for 10 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water.

Alum powder is extremely effective for treating pimples and acne as well. It’s a natural healing agent and contains antibacterial properties, which can help cure pimples. Create a face pack by combining one teaspoon alum powder, two teaspoons rose water and two teaspoons of Multani mitti or fuller’s earth powder. Apply this face pack once every week to treat existing pimples and prevent further breakouts.

It’s common for women to get inflamed and irritated skin after waxing and shaving. And here again, alum powder can be your savior. Just apply a paste of 1 teaspoon of alum powder and two teaspoons of rose water to the affected region. Leave it for 10 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water.

Alum powder acts as an exfoliator to remove the dead skin from the heels, thereby making it soft and smooth. Make a pack by mixing two teaspoons of alum powder, one teaspoon of coconut or olive oil and one teaspoon honey. Apply this mixture on washed and dried heels and leave it for 15 minutes. Wash it off with lukewarm water and pat dry. You need to follow this method twice or thrice a week to treat cracked heels.

Additionally, alum powder also tightens the skin to prevent the onset of signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines. You just need to apply a face pack of alum powder and honey to avail these benefits. Mix one teaspoon of alum powder and one teaspoon of honey and mix well to form a paste. Apply the mixture all over the face and leave it for 15 minutes. Wash it off with cold water and pat dry. Alternatively, you can even rub alum powder on the wet face, leave it for 10 minutes and then wash it off.

The antibacterial properties of alum powder can treat head lice effectively. Make a hair mask by mixing 4 grams of alum powder with 200 ml of water. Apply this mask liberally on the scalp and hair, leave it for 30 minutes to an hour and then shampoo as usual. Follow this method once weekly to see a reduction in head lice.

To get rid of dandruff, add a pinch of alum powder and salt to your regular shampoo and wash your hair as well. Ensure that you do not go overboard with alum powder.
