Also known as, the Hollywood diet, the 800-calorie grapefruit diet has dominated the United States since the 1930s. It is based on the idea of eating grapefruit along with carbohydrate and protein rich foods. It was created by Kelly D. Brownell, who was on a lookout for a diet that could help people lose weight quickly. It later became popular in the 80s again as the nickname, “10-days, 10 pounds-off diet”.
There are a few variations of the grapefruit diet as well, but they are considered potentially unhealthy and dangerous because of the extremely low levels of calories, carbohydrates and micronutrients prescribed.
Claim Of Grapefruit Diet:
The grapefruit diet claims a weight loss of 10 pounds in 12 days, all due to the fat burning enzymes found in the fruit. The best part of this diet is that you do not have to starve yourself to attain a thinner frame.
If you go the scientific way, grapefruit is loaded with fiber, which keeps the tummy full for a long time and the tart taste, provided by its vitamin C content, prevents the desire of binging on sweet foods. As per the British Nutrition Foundation, the initial weight loss in the grapefruit diet is due to the loss of fluid and carbohydrates and the reduced calorie intake.
What Do The Nutritionists Say About Grapefruit Diet In The 21st Century?
In the 30s, and again in 80s, most of the nutritionists dismissed the grapefruit diet as just another fad diet. They gave the reasons that the fat-burning properties of grapefruit were a myth, and any kind of weight loss experienced during this phase could be because of the extremely low-calorie intake.
But it seems that nutritionists have begun reconsidering the use of grapefruit in weight loss. The Scripps Clinic, led by Dr. Ken Fujioka, conducted a 12-week study to monitor the weight, insulin secretion, and metabolic factors associated with the consumption of grapefruit. As many as 91 obese people participated in the Grapefruit diet study. The study concluded that people who ate half a grapefruit with every meal lost 3.5 pounds, those who drank a cup of grapefruit juice with every meal lost 3.3 pounds and those who ate grapefruit capsule lost 2.4 pounds. Some participants also reported having lost as much as 10 pounds (1)

Cons Of Grapefruit Diet:
- The results claimed by the grapefruit diet are not backed with research. Nutritionists opine that the low-carb, and low-protein intake, which is the core of the grapefruit diet, can result in quick and temporary weight loss, even without grapefruit.
- A weight loss of 10 pounds in 10 days in quite unrealistic. This drastic weight loss can lead to muscle and water loss.
- Since the diet restricts consumption of entire food groups, dieters may get weary of it in a few days and quit dieting.
- The weight comes back after a few days, as the weight loss is mostly water weight.
- Grapefruit is perceived to interfere with certain medications, according to the Food and Drug Administration (2). These medications include a few of the statin drugs, nifedipine, used for blood pressure, organ transplant rejection drugs, antihistamines like Allegra and much more.
Grapefruit Diet Plan:
Breakfast– Two boiled eggs, two slices of bacon, ½ grapefruit or 8 ounces of grapefruit fruit.
Lunch– Salad with a dressing of your choice, any type of meat in any amount, 8 ounces of grapefruit juice or ½ grapefruit.
Dinner– Any meat prepared in any way, red or green vegetable salad, tea or coffee, 8 ounces of grapefruit juice or ½ a grapefruit
Bedtime Snack– 8 ounces of skim milk or tomato juice
- Green onion
- Bell peppers
- Red onions
Vegetables That Are Not Allowed:
- White onion
Drinks To Include In Grapefruit Diet:
- Tea or coffee, 1 cup a day
- Water, 8 glasses a day
- Low fat milk, 1 cup
Foods To Include In The Grapefruit Diet:
- Salt, pepper and butter, in minimal amount
- A bit of nuts and cheese
Things Not To Eat In Grapefruit Diet:
- Deep fried foods are not allowed
- Alcohol is not allowed
Does Grapefruit Diet Work?
There is no scientific backing concerning the results of the grapefruit. It works only because of the calorie restriction, which has nothing to do with grapefruit. You can try it if you have an upcoming event to attend, but do not expect long-term benefits from it. To keep the weight off, you’d have to eat healthily and exercise regularly.
